Our Guests Today - Ra, Gorydie and Julie

Well this term has seen some fantastic work carried out by many groups in the class and around the school. Our big idea of looking at different Health related agencies in our community, the challenges they face and the way in whic we can make some sort of effort to help them has seen some fantastic student led inquiry.

One group of boys - Flynn, Austin, Beau, Bruno and Matt have worked hard on similar stuff to the group of boys who held the baking sale written about in a previous post. The boys wanted to learn about the challenges of living with blindness and vision impairment and had a particular interest in learning about the challenges faced by training and rasing Guide Dogs. The put together some good info that was shared to the class and other classes.

Did you know it costs $22500.00 to train a puppy to become a guide dog!! As part of their inquiry work the boys were lucky enough to make contact with Ra and Gorydie(I think this is the spelling of Gorydie pronounced as Jordie). Ra is completely blind and Gorydie is his trusty guide dog. Today at school the boys arranged for a talk wiht all the Year 7 classes with questions for Ra and Gorydie who also had Julie form the foundation for the blind along with them. Ra answered many questions and was great to listen to, a real inspiartional and positive guy. After the chat the boys had a sausage sizzle to raise some money that they are able to contribute to the foundation to help wiht the costs of training puppies into guide dogs. A very successful Sausage Sizzle saw the boys make over $200 profit - an updated figure will be available early next term when they present their final cheque to the foundation. A super effort in all that you have organised and achieved here boys - awesome stuff!!
A special thanks must also go to Bridget(Flynn's Mum) and Ryan from Sport Otago for their help with the BBQ cooking - thanks heaps!
